Arsenal started the match with cesc fabregas back in the side but the big surprise was to be found on the arsenal bench, where robin van persie sat, apparently available to sub if needed.
Newcastle started brightly and dominated the opening five minutes but the gunners soon found some rhythm and the game settled into a battle for the midfield.
A cesc fabregas free kick in the 12th minute nearly opened the scoring as the shot took a deflection and hit the crossbar.
Newcastle, however, took the lead in the 45th minute when andy carroll rose majestically to get his head to a lofted free kick and beat arsenal keeper lukasz fabianski.
It was a reinvigorated arsenal that started the second half and within minutes theo walcott had hit the newcastle crossbar.
Robin van persie entered in the 58th, joining andrei arshavin who had entered the match earlier.
Arsene wenger further bolstered his strike force with the introduction later on of nicklas bendtner.
As the second half progressed, however, arsenal were continually thwarted by a capable newcastle defense, which was always able to get a vital touch on the ball.
Four minutes of stoppage time must have looked like a forthcoming eon or two to the magpies as they prepared to defend in the face of the inevitable arsenal onslaught.

Newcastle now hold an improbable 5th place in the league.
